“Salute Your Shorts:” Upgrading The Shorts You Wear

Left to Right: Mark McNairy, J. Crew, Bonobos, Gap

It’s that time of year when you just have to wear shorts so not to die in the heat. But before you do, we’ll give you a heads up on what to wear during those scorching days and nights.

First things first, guys it’s time to stop wearing shorts that might be mistake for pants. The “Calvin and Hobbs” look is dead and gone. Instead look for something that sits anywhere just below or above the knee.

Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson

11″ Stanton short $59.50 – J. Crew

Lightweight garment dye shorts 10″ $44.95 – Gap

Second, your shorts should fit more like pants. So that means, look for something that is narrower like a pant or if you’re feeling adventurous make some cut-off shorts of your own.

RVCA Weekender Shorts In Grey $40.00 – Need Supply Co.

Blue Canvas Raw Edge Shorts $60.00 – Topman USA

Don’t be afraid to prep up your shorts with some classic nautical patters. And for those with a rebellious streak, look for shorts with non-traditional patterns.

Embroidered Club Shorts $59.99 – Vineyard Vines

Hawkings McGill Printed Cutoff Chino Short $44.00 – Urban Outfitters

Highland camo short $89.50 – J. Crew

The same goes for swimwear. Board shorts shouldn’t sit somewhere around mid-calf; rather just like normal shorts, they should sit just below or above the knee.

Striped boardshorts $39.95 – Gap

Low Tides Midnight Blue $65.00 – Bonobos

Original Penguin Solid Volley Swim Trunk $65.00 – Zappos

These are the shorts we’re digging on this year. You could call it the short list:

CPO Chambray Short $49.00 – Urban Outfitters

Men’s Plain-Front Bermudas 8″ $18.00 – Old Navy

Obey Salty Dog Street Trunk $73.00 – Need Supply Co.

Navy And White Striped Shorts $56.00 – Topman USA

Koto Hawaii Print Short $54.00 – Urban Outfitters
